Japan plans ⁇ conveyor belt ⁇ way to close driver gap

Japan's truck driver shortage is getting worse due to laws enacted earlier this year that limit drivers from working overtime. This situation, which is seen as necessary to prevent hard work and accidents and to make things bearable, is known as the ⁇ 2024 problem ⁇ around Japanese logistics, government and transportation.

Japan is planning an automated cargo transport corridor in the middle of Tokyo and Osaka. The project's financing measure is not set now, but it is seen as a valuable way to help the country deal with increasing deliveries.

In a computer graphic image prepared by the government, he is in the middle of a large highway. ⁇ automatic flow path ⁇ Large, wheeled boxes are shown moving along a three-lane corridor, also called

It is aimed that a trial system will start testing in 2027 or early 2028 and be fully operational in the mid-2030s.

Yuri Endo, a senior deputy director who oversees work at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, We need to be innovative in the way we approach roads. The basic concept of the automatic flow path is to create special areas for logistics within the road network using a 24-hour automated and unmanned transportation system ⁇ He said it.

Endo said the system will help offset the declining workforce and reduce drivers' workload, as well as reduce carbon emissions.

SWITZERLAND AND ENGLAND ARE ALSO EVALUATED

This plan is also priced in Switzerland and England. The plan in Switzerland will include an underground road, while the plan in London will be a fully automated system powered by low-cost linear motors.

In Japan, loading will be automated using forklifts and coordinated with airports, railways and ports.

The system, which is also designed for business deliveries, can be extended to other routes if all goes well. Although driverless technology may be used in the future, human drivers may need to make last mile deliveries to people's doors again.

According to the government's assumptions, under the current conditions, Japan's total transport capacity is expected to increase by 2030. %It will fall by 34%. According to the Japan Truckers Association, the domestic transport capacity is approximately 4.3 billion metric tons, of which almost all or %More than 91 are carried out by trucks.

According to government information, demand for deliveries from online shopping increased during the pandemic, even as the general population continued to decline as the birth rate declined, and users found that Japanese households had an approximate %From the 40 %He went over 60.

In recent years, the annual death toll from the collision of delivery trucks on the roads is about a thousand. While this number is better than nearly 2,000 deaths in 2010, the Truckers Association, which brings together nearly 400 trucking businesses and organizations in the country, wants to make deliveries even more credible.

Red Sea Crisis Increases Sea Route Prices

The US recently towed the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower from the Red Sea and sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its escort ships in its place. The primary mission of the American fleet here is to protect maritime shipping routes from the Arabian Peninsula to the Suez Canal.

This news didn't make the headlines and didn't attract much public attention. But the sea route passing through the Red Sea is very important for world trade.

Houthi militias have been firing on ships coming from Yemen for more than six months that they associate with Israel because of their owners or operators.

Bloomberg news agency reported on June 20 that the Houthis, who are in favor of Palestine in the Gaza crisis, sank a cargo ship carrying coal using a UCAV.

In response to the Houthis' attacks, the United States and Britain have repeatedly hit militia positions in Yemen in recent months. In addition, other warships belonging to the international coalition are trying to secure shipping traffic off the Yemeni coast. The German navy also appears in the region with the ⁇ Hessen ⁇ frigate within the scope of AB ⁇ 's ⁇ Aspides ⁇ mission.

Costs are rising again

Since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza in October last year, global trade has been under great pressure. Traders around the world have to spend more money to account for higher shipping costs and insure their goods.

Shipowners also complain about high insurance costs as the risk of losing their ships increases significantly. Ships that avoid passing through the Suez Canal and instead travel around the Cape of Good Hope are forced to take into account longer journey times and higher fuel costs.

⁇ Drewry World Container Index ⁇ monitors the freight market and records exorbitant price increases. The price to be paid for transportation activities carried out by sea, land, air or railway is called ⁇ navlun ⁇ . According to the index, the average freight price for a large standard container of 40 feet ⁇ increased by seven percent in June, compared to the previous year, an enormous increase of 233 percent. On some routes, prices have risen even more sharply.

Indirect effects of what happened in the Red Sea

Simon MacAdam, an economist at London-based independent financial consulting firm Capitol Economics, comments on DW ⁇ ye:

It should not be forgotten that direct armed conflicts are not responsible for the current price increases. The real trigger for the cost seems to be that importers are pushing many orders forward to ensure they have enough goods in stock throughout the year. In addition, factors such as the fact that ships have to go around the Cape of Good Hope put great pressure on shipping and cause prices to increase even more.

The route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa means that ships must fully circumnavigate the African continent before reaching Europe.

Container and shipping prices have increased significantlyPhoto: Panthermedia and IMAGO

We need more ships.

Jan Hoffmann, a trade expert at the World Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), a Geneva-based UN agency, explains why DW ⁇ ye freight prices are generally rising:

The main reason for this is the extension of the distances that ships have to travel. Deviations around South Africa require more ships to maintain supply. The average distance for a container will be nine percent longer in 2024 compared to 2022.

Hoffmann continues his words as follows:

If ships are to travel longer, more transport capacity will have to be used. This means buying or renting more ships and employing more staff. Longer routes require more ships. If these ships are not yet available, freight prices will rise even higher. ⁇

The environment is also suffering from this situation, according to the UNCTAD expert:

Another effect is that ships increase their speed. Higher speeds to cover longer distances, for example, led to a 70 percent increase in emissions on the Singapore-Rotterdam route.

According to Hoffmann ⁇ , if the deviations continue for a longer time, this will lead to continued price increases and further restrictions on international trade.

The water level in the Panama Canal is higher than in the previous yearPhoto: Agustin Herrera/AP Photo/picture alliance

There's a double bottleneck

The maritime bottleneck also prevents goods from being transported elsewhere, Hoffmann stresses:

Due to the inadequacy of the water level in the Panama Canal, navigation is not possible without restrictions. Since both the Suez and Panama canals cannot be used at full capacity, the USA needs to build a land bridge to maritime connections with East Asia. In other words, land transportation should be carried out by rail or road from the ports on the west coast to the centers on the east coast. ⁇

But it doesn't seem that easy. This method is also considered economically inefficient, especially when it comes to the shipment of wheat or liquid gas. For this reason, like the alternative route around Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America, a very long and dangerous deviation is preferred.

The Suez Canal is of great importance for world tradePhoto: picture alliance/NaLha/Shotshop

⁇ The situation can get worse ⁇

The situation in the Red Sea remains tense. According to Bloomberg, about 70 percent of international maritime transporters still avoid the area and instead choose to travel around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

The deployment of the US Navy's new aircraft carrier fleet also shows how serious the situation in the region is in the long run by the military.

Economist Simon MacAdam believes that a prolonged crisis will push shipowners too far and cause freight prices to rise even higher:

It takes many years to build the ship and 90 percent of the new containers are built in China. Therefore, ships and containers cannot be built overnight for higher capacities. Therefore, the situation may get worse in the long run.

Minister of Uraloğlu: Turkey-Europe Development Path is Realizing

Minister Uraloğlu, who is present to support Turkish companies in InnoTrans ⁇ , Europe's largest international transport technologies, systems and vehicles fair held biennially in Berlin, met with representatives of Turkish non-governmental organizations and business people at the Turkish Embassy in Berlin.

Uraloğlu stated that they were in Berlin on the occasion of participating in a fair that is important worldwide and said that Germany is one of the countries with which Turkey has the most intense and highest level of relations.

Uraloğlu draws attention to the strategic location of Turkey on the world map, ⁇ If you open the geography of our map to someone who does not know the world at all, he shows our country with his finger. Because this place is precious. We are really in such a precious place. We are in a really valuable geography from the east-west passageways to the historical Silk Road to the modern Silk Road.

Uraloğlu explained that they traveled to 67 countries with a 4-hour flight from Turkey and said that these 67 countries have a population of 1.5 billion, a national income of 40 trillion dollars and a trade volume of 10 trillion dollars.

Stating that Turkey is located on both east-west and north-south trade routes, especially the Middle Corridor, Uraloğlu said, ⁇ We also want to strengthen this position of Turkey seriously. We are investing in him, he said.

We built 32 airports in 22 years.

Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that they work day and night with all the teams of the ministry in an effort to serve the citizens and continued as follows:

⁇ In the last 22 years, we have increased the divided road length from 6 thousand 101 kilometers to 29 thousand 505 kilometers... While the vehicle ownership in Turkey was approximately 8 million, today the vehicle ownership has increased to 30 million. We also increased the average speed between cities from 40 kilometers per hour to 90 kilometers per hour. There were 26 airports in Turkey. We built 32 more airports in 22 years. It's really easy to say. So we almost built an airport every year and a half. The number of people traveling was 214 million last year, including international flights.

We think it's going to be $230 million this year. Istanbul Airport was 53 million as of the end of last month. We expect it to reach 80 million this year. What did we do on the other side of the railroad? It's about 11,000 kilometers. After we started in the early days of Cumhuriyet, we revived the railway move, which unfortunately we could not continue much. It has made the existing railway signaled and electric. We introduced our country to high-speed trains again. We built a railway network of 2,250 kilometers. ⁇

Minister Uraloğlu, we are working intensively on a Development Road Corridor that can reach from ⁇ Basra Bay ⁇ to Türkiye ⁇ via Iraq and from there to the whole of Europe. In order to strengthen the position of the country, we are in an effort to quickly eliminate its deficiencies in the transportation corridors. ⁇

Uraloğlu pointed out that they continue to work, that they do not only invest in infrastructure in Turkey, that they also start to produce rail system vehicles, and we produced our own electric passenger train, which goes at 160 kilometers per hour, for example, within our iron roads.

We were already building our locomotives. Now we are at a speed of 225 kilometers, I hope we will start this next year. We'll produce it. On the one hand, we are now planning to build 300-350 kilometers of roads. For example, we want to make a super-fast train between Ankara ⁇ and Istanbul at 350 kilometers per hour. ⁇

Uraloğlu, who also stated that there are 217 large and small ports in Turkey, how can we make our country truly equipped against all risks after Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war? How can we overcome those risks with little difficulty? We're thinking about it, he said.

⁇ Being in Germany is very valuable ⁇

Uraloğlu said that the number of mobile phone subscribers in Turkey, which has a population of 85 million, exceeded 90 million. Emphasizing that they are trying to meet the needs in 81 provinces of Turkey, Uraloğlu continued as follows:

We tried to touch him for God's sake. God has given us these things, and He has given us these things. How do we make our people's work easier? We have been in this effort, with good intentions... Here are the possibilities limited, the needs unlimited. I'd like to say I've never agreed to that. Is it not clear what a person's needs are? Is there no limit?

Absolutely there is. Aren't the needs of a country limited? Absolutely, in that sense, sometimes there are discourses at the point of a complete consumption policy. I'd say I don't find them quite right with that approach. Of course, we should have caught this point of Turkey much earlier. We have done very well in terms of technology, but I would like to say that we have more work to do. We're trying at that point. ⁇

Uraloğlu reminded that 3.5 million people of Turkish origin live in Germany and said that 10 percent of this is in the capital Berlin.

Minister Uraloğlu, ⁇ Dear brothers, it is very valuable for you to be here. For one thing, you have an effort at the subsistence of your own family and relatives individually. So you have a lot of sacrifices. Then it's about bringing foreign currency to our country. Then you have your efforts to provide employment here. These are really precious to us. You're here selflessly. And you represent our country, our Turkey, here in a beautiful way. I think your every move is the equivalent of a representation in that sense. ⁇ He spoke in the form.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu then answered questions from representatives of Turkish non-governmental organizations and business people.

If you work in these professions, be prepared for depression to knock on your door.

One profession that increases the risk of depression is the profession of first responders, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Constant exposure to traumatic events, the emotional strain of coping with high-stress situations and emergencies, can lead to chronic stress and burnout, which are important risk factors for depression.

Health workers are also at increased risk of depression due to the difficulty of their work. Long working hours, the emotional tension that comes with caring for a large number of patients and patients or sufferers, can lead to compassion fatigue and feelings of helplessness.

This is especially true for occupations such as nurses and doctors working in intensive care units or nursing homes.

Business, especially in high-stress sectors such as finance and law, can also contribute to the risk of depression. The pressure to meet tight deadlines, achieve ambitious goals, and overcome fierce competition can lead to chronic stress and feelings of inadequacy, which over time can lead to depressive symptoms.

Occupations that require a lot of isolation, such as long-distance truck drivers, those who work from home, or those who work in research labs, can also increase the risk of depression. Lack of social contact and limited exposure to natural sunlight can disrupt circadian rhythms and contribute to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Although the teaching profession is extremely rewarding, it is another profession where the risk of depression is high. Teachers often face heavy workloads, administrative pressures, and the emotional challenges of supporting different groups of students; All of these can contribute to feelings of depression and burnout.

Also, professions in the entertainment and creative industries, such as actors, musicians, and writers, can be mentally exhausting. The unpredictability of job opportunities, constant self-assessment and pressure to maintain public image can contribute to mood disorders in these professions.

It is important to note that individual resilience, coping strategies, and support systems play a critical role in determining whether a person will become depressed due to their occupation. Employers can help mitigate these risks by implementing mental health support programs, promoting work-life balance, and promoting open communication about mental health issues.

In some professions, it can be said that the risk of depression is higher due to the specific difficulties and stressors it creates. However, it is important to recognize that depression can affect anyone, regardless of their profession, and that seeking help and support is crucial to maintaining good mental health.
