Italy’'s antitrust authority, Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), announced on Tuesday that it has launched an official investigation into easyJet Airline Company Limited over allegations of unfair commercial practice.
The case focuses on how the carrier configures and offers baggage fees on its website and mobile app; The regulator claims that passengers are routinely given a distorted picture of the amount they actually pay.
According to AGCM’, the easyJet’in platform automatically combines round-trip luggage and sports equipment by default and offers only an overall average price for the service, even when customers do not intend to purchase this service for both pillars of their journey.
The organizer suggests that anyone who wants to add luggage for just one leg has had to interrupt the booking process to override this setting, a step that most consumers are unlikely to notice or direct.
The investigation will assess whether the easyJet’in reservation system creates unclear pricing conditions and limits consumers' ability to make fully informed choices.
At the time of writing, easyJet made no public comment on the matter.
