A 38-year-old Chinese woman living in Germany has been arrested on charges of providing sensitive information about Germany's arms exports to China's intelligence services. This was the latest arrest for espionage in Germany at a time of growing concern over China and Russia's intelligence gathering.
In accordance with strict confidentiality rules, the woman, identified only as Yaqi X., works at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, the German federal prosecutor said on Tuesday. In the statement, it was stated that he was accused of transmitting ⁇ flight, cargo and passenger ⁇ information about arms exports, as well as information about the employees of a German arms manufacturer.
Located about 90 miles southwest of Berlin, the airport is one of the largest cargo hubs in Europe, handling over 1.5 million tons of cargo each year. Authorities said Ms. X. ⁇ in worked at a logistics company operating outside the airport.
Authorities said he also had close ties to a Chinese man identified as Jian G., who was arrested in Germany in April and accused of spying in Germany and Brussels.
Police arrested Ms. X. ⁇ i on Monday and searched her apartment in Leipzig and her workplace at the airport.
Berlin began to worry about the number of active spies in Germany and the intelligence gathering of China, Germany's largest trading partner, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
