EU Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d promised on Friday a new tool designed to help European \u200b\u200b enterprises diversify suppliers and prevent the shortage of critical materials from China\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d at the Brussels Economic Security Forum\u2019, organised by the European Policy Centre and in partnership with Euronews\u2019, said \u201cDiversification now requires a special tool. \u201cRecent industrial cases, particularly the supply of chips and rare earths, have strengthened my belief that a step change is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
His announcement followed disruptions in European strategic industries last year when China\u2019 blocked exports of green technologies and rare-earth elements needed for the defense sector, as well as chips used by the automotive industry.<\/p>\n
But such a move could exacerbate tensions with Beijing, which threatens retaliation if AB\u2019 closes its market to Chinese companies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndustry must do its part\u201d<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d later told Euronews\u2019e that the approach would require companies to source from three different suppliers, but that \u201c still had to decide what to actually do with the \u201d legal proposal.<\/p>\n The proposal will ensure that companies do not fully trust a single supplier, such as China. However, businesses in AB\u2019 may be reluctant to support such a measure if it increases production costs.<\/p>\n The commissioner said economic security is a common \u201c responsibility, and European \u201d companies should address geopolitical risks as part of their \u200b\u200b core business.<\/p>\n \u201cIndustry is on the front line. We have to look out for them, but the industry has to do its part. - \u201d<\/p>\n In 2025, Dutch authorities took over chip maker Nexperia\u2019 due to concerns that Chinese owner Wingtech Technology\u2019 could move important operations and intellectual property rights to China\u2019e. Beijing responded by temporarily blocking the export of Nexperia\u2019's products and the chips required for the European automotive industry.<\/p>\n The threat facing Europe\u2019 is not solely due to the supply of chips. This is also the block \u2019i is also due to its dependence on the rare lands of China, refined and processed by the Asian giant.<\/p>\n During trade tensions with the U.S. last year, China also halted rare-earth exports.
