Germany is sitting on a gold fortune, and some economists and politicians think it may be time to open the piggy bank.<\/p>\n
The German Bundesbank \u2019 holds 3,350 tons of gold, making it the second largest reserve in the world after the US \u2019. With the precious metal recently exceeding $4,700 (4.140 euros) per ounce, the value of these reserves is currently close to 440 billion euros.<\/p>\n
Marcel Fratzscher, president of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), says that this amount amounts to a large piggy bank\u201d against the \u201ccrises, and Germany argues that \u2019 should be willing to use at least some of this amount.<\/p>\n
