As rising costs push Greeks away from Turkey’, Turkish tourists flock to Greece’

Economic relations between Greeks and Turks have changed significantly in recent years.

The two neighbors have long witnessed political leaders tossing and turning between the conflict and what diplomats call “sakin waters” (a phrase used to describe the current spell).

Overall trade and tourism volumes have doubled in five years, but gains have fallen unevenly on both sides compared to what was previously observed.

Maria Dimou, who lives in ’, Istanbul, “Up until about 10 years ago, people came to ’ from Greece, especially Istanbul, Edirne and Keşan. But now we see a lot more visitors coming to ’ from Turkey’ to Greece, because everything they want to buy is cheaper there, ” said.

Dimou continued: “TurkeyThe basic needs one needs to live and make a living in ’ are cheap.”

But when they want to buy something more expensive “prices go up, so they go to ’ in Greece and visit Thrace’, especially Alexandroupolis’, but some also go as far as Kavala’ for vacation or shopping, and especially here [in Turkey’] they go for food, drink and cold meat, which is very expensive” added.

GreeceThe number of Turks visiting ’ has tripled in four years

While the number of Greeks visiting ’ each year has remained stable at just over 500,000’, the number of Turks arriving in ’ in Greece has tripled over the past four years on a similar basis; According to estimates obtained by the relevant authorities from various sources, it exceeded 1.5 million last year, but the official ELSTAT figures are slightly lower.

Doruk Euronews’e, a computer engineer who lives permanently in Ankara’ but whom we met at a popular shopping mall in Istanbul’, said: “I went on holiday to ’a in Greece last month. I drove all the way to Kavala and Thessaloniki ’ and honestly I really liked Greece ’. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and everything was cheap.”

TurkeyPeople in ’ Greecereact to the more affordable prices in ’ and say they want to return as soon as possible.

Symeon Soltaridis, who lives in Istanbul’ and is the President of the Balino Greek Community, said that “Many Turks either make day trips to the Edirne region and go to Orestiada’ from there, or gradually switch to Greece’ as a tourist, because the cost of tourism in Greece’ is much lower than in Turkey’, and as a result, thousands of people go to the Greek islands, especially in the summer months, passing through Ayvalık and other regions” said.

Greek Consulate in ’ is issuing 1,300 visas per day

Greece has become a very attractive destination for Turkish citizens. According to diplomatic sources, only the Greek consulate in Istanbul’ issues about 1,300 visas per day; Most of them are very introverted. These visas are primarily provided by Turks who plan repeated visits for the holiday, but shopping trips are also available.

This figure does not include approximately 25,000 Turks who have obtained or are in the process of obtaining a residence permit through golden visa programs or by working in ’, Greece.

In addition, within the scope of a quick on-site visa arrangement, a large number of people living in large parts of Izmir and Anadolu’, who made short visits to 12 islands in the Northeast Aegean ’ and Twelve Islands ’ for up to seven days, were not taken into account.

Eastern Aegean’de ‘Visa Express’

The plan, known as the “ Visa Express, and announced as part of the broader ” interpersonal diplomacy, was approved by the European Commission and launched after the Kyriakos Mitsotakis government met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council session.

The program includes 12 candidates: Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Lesbos, Leros, Limni, Rhodes, Samos, Symi, Chios, Patmos and Samothrace. Visas are issued at port entry points, are valid for seven days and link the holder to the island where the visa is issued; Passage from the island to the island is not allowed. As a result, there was a strong tourism increase in the islands.

Kos topped the list of destinations last year largely because of its proximity to Bodrum’, followed by Rhodes and Chios, which attracted predominantly high-income visitors.

Lesbos and Samos were in the top five. August was the busiest month in 2025’ with about 281,000 arrivals; This was followed by July with 233,000 arrivals and September with about 188,000 arrivals.

‘Greeks can no longer cope with prices in Istanbul’

However, there are complaints that Greeks who come to ’ in Turkey are no longer shopping as before.

Kantar Pehlivanoğlu, owner of a street stall that sells jewelry and fashion accessories in Istanbul’, told euronews’e: “I had more Greek customers in the past, but now it is even harder for them to come to ’, let alone shop, Turkey, and this is because of their financial situation compared to the past.”

Soltaridis of Istanbul also underlined that prices have become too high for Greek visitors.

“, once upon a time, they would come and take all sorts of things. Now they come, they look, they experience the city, they see us, the Greek Cypriots, but they can't buy anymore because things have become expensive, ” said.

According to official figures, every Greek who visited Turkey’ last year spent an average of 340 euros per trip; This figure has increased by about 50 euros a year over the past three years.

However, this increase in practice leads to fewer purchases than before. TurkeyThe sharp increase in ’'s cost of living means that Greek visitors receive less in return for their money.

Turkish visitors to ’, meanwhile, spent an average of just over 300 Euro’ per trip, or precisely over 303 Euro’, according to the latest data from the Bank of Greek’.

Dimou, “GreeceIt is much cheaper to go to ’, eat there in a tavern, drink ouzo or other drinks, spend the night here and return, than to go to a similar tavern in Istanbul’, ” explained.

“GreeceThe quality of food in ’ has increased significantly, and while prices are considered affordable for Turks, here in Turkey’ has increased rapidly.”

Great change in the Greek-Turkish trade balance

At the same time, according to the Greek Statistical Institute’ (ELSTAT), there has been a significant shift in the trade balance between the two countries over the past few years.

For example, imports from Turkey ’ to Greece ’ reached 1.34 billion Euro’ in 2020’, exceeded 2 billion Euro’ the following year and 3 billion Euro’ in 2024’te, and are currently estimated at 3.34 billion Euros for last year.

In contrast, it is estimated that for 2025, exports from ’ to Turkey ’ will be only 1.37 billion euros; This figure has fallen in the last three years, reaching 3 billion Euro’ in 2022’, the last year in which Greece’ exports more to Turkey than it imports to ’.

Turkey lifts restrictions on direct trade with Armenia’ to improve relations

Turkey lifted the restriction on direct trade with Armenia on Wednesday as a symbolic gesture to improve ties between its longtime rivals.

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli said that under the new regulation, shipments of goods from Turkey or Armenia ’ through a third country can now be directly shown as the final destination or point of origin, Turkey or Armenia, and the pre-restriction on such definitions has been lifted.

Using the government's preferred writing for Turkey, in light of the historic opportunity seized to strengthen lasting peace and prosperity in “ South Caucasus, Turkey will continue to contribute to the development of economic relations in the region and the further advancement of cooperation for the benefit of all countries and peoples in the region.’

Armenia welcomed the move.

We would like to emphasize that this is an important step towards the establishment of full and normalized relations between the two countries, which can logically continue through the opening of the Armenia-Turkey border and the establishment of diplomatic relations, ’ said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at Prague Castle’nde, October 6, 2022

Turkey and Armenia ’ have no official relations and their common borders have been closed since the 1990s.

Relations between neighbours are strained by historical disagreements and Turkey's close alliance with Azerbaijan ’.

However, Ankara and Yerevan agreed to work towards improving relations in late 2021’ and appointed special envoys to discuss ways to reconcile and open the border.

Efforts have resulted in the resumption of direct flights between the two countries and the easing of some visa restrictions.

He said technical and bureaucratic efforts to open the common border are also ongoing.

AzerbaijanTurkey, a close ally of ’, closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in solidarity with Baku, which is in conflict with ’ over Karabakh, internationally known as Nagorno-Karabakh.

AzerbaijanThe national flag of ’ flies over destroyed houses in a residential area in Ganja’ where Armenian forces were hit by rocket fire overnight, October 22, 2020

In 2020, Turkey strongly supported Azerbaijan ’ in its six-week conflict with Armenian-backed ethnic Armenian forces over Karabakh; This caused Azerbaijan ’ to regain control of a significant part of the region and most of the ethnic Armenian population to leave the region.

Azerbaijan used Turkish military equipment, including warplanes, in the conflict.

Turkey and Armenia ’ also have a long and bitter relationship due to the deaths of approximately 1.5 million Armenian ’ in the massacres, deportations and forced marches that began in 1915’ in the Ottoman Turkey ’.

Historians commonly see the event as genocide. Turkey strongly denies this accusation and opposes the numbers; The Ottoman Empire says that among the hundreds of thousands of people who died in the chaos of the First World War ’ during the dissolution of ’, there were also Armenians.

Europe’'s electricity storage race: Which countries are leading in battery capacity?

Most countries aim to diversify their energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Batteries are at the heart of the transition to renewable energy. They determine how much electricity a storage system can hold and feed into the power grid.

Some countries have brought battery capacities online in recent years, while others have unveiled pipelines by making investments to expand their own capacities.

Which countries have the highest operational battery capacity in Europe? Which countries emerge as leaders when the pipeline is included?

According to Ember’in Europe and Turkey Electricity Review 2026 reports, Germany is Europe’'s leader with 2.8 gigawatts (GW) in operational battery capacity, followed by Italy (2 GW).

A second group is between 0.5 GW and 1 GW: Ireland (0.92 GW), Sweden (0.75 GW), Bulgaria (0.56 GW) and France (0.52 GW).

Romania (0.49 GW), Belgium (0.47 GW), Finland (0.39 GW), the Netherlands (0.39 GW) and Turkey (0.21 GW) complete the ranking below 0.5 GW’.

No country matches ’'s battery targets

When the project lines are included, a very different picture emerges and Turkey stands out as the most ambitious country in Europe ’ in terms of battery expansion.

The project line is calculated as the sum of the following categories: under construction, permitted and announced.

Turkey’'s 32.8 GW’ project pipeline is more than three times that of its closest competitors, Germany (10.5 GW), Poland (10.4 GW) and Italy (10.2 GW).

Ufuk Alparslan, regional leader of Ember’in and author of the Turkish Electricity Magazine 2026’, told Euronews Business’: The main success of the “ policy came when the regulator opened unlimited grid capacity for wind and solar projects integrated into storage, which attracted investors.’

Pipelines are of course not guaranteed; However, if these investment plans are implemented, they will be decisive in shaping the expected total capacity. This will make Turkey ’ the leader in Europe ’ with a total battery capacity of 32.97 GW.

This will be followed by Germany (13.26 GW), Italy (12.15 GW) and Poland (10.42 GW), each accounting for roughly a third of Turkey's total.

Romania, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium will also see significant improvements in battery capacity, according to Ember’; But it's still modest compared to the first four countries.

Reasons behind the Great Expansion

Dr Beatrice Petrovich, senior energy analyst at Ember’ and author of the European Electricity Review 2026’, emphasized that falling battery prices have led to rapid battery storage deployments across Europe.

Euronews Business’a said: “Battery costs on grid scale, 2024According to ’ %With a decline of 45’, 2025’te fell to a record low, and in the last decade it has been about %The annual cost of 20’ continued its downward trend. As the battery economy evolves, projects become increasingly profitable without subsidies.”

Petrovich also noted that the scale of operational and future battery fleets across European countries ultimately depends on policy preferences, while technology and economy are now largely in place.

“Stable policy frameworks unlock battery potential because they mean predictable revenue streams that allow project developers to attract capital, ” said.

Petrovich explained that several EU countries, including Bulgaria, Italy and Spain, have already shown how policies can accelerate deployment.

“Germany also shows how policy uncertainty can slow progress. The proposed preferential treatment for gas in auxiliary power tenders and uncertainty over changes in the grid fee undermine investor confidence, ” added.

France lags behind in battery expansion

France will more than double its capacity to 1.12 GW’. However, this will leave him second to last among the 16 countries on the list, among the lowest in .

Nuclear power is at the heart of ’'s energy mix, which may help explain why its claims about batteries remain limited. Nuclear Energy AB’'s Energy Mixture Creating ’sini, France %He leads the block with 40. According to Ember’, France will produce electricity in 2025. ’unu was made up of nuclear energy.

Can the ’ pipeline be built in Turkey?

Alparslan stated that if a power plant project is approved and an associate license is obtained, only the network capacity is guaranteed. While securing grid capacity is one of the biggest hurdles for new installations, it does not guarantee that the project will come into play.

Alparslan, Euronews Business’a said: “Investors are eager to complete these projects. The government's decision to extend the timeline will determine how much of the planned capacity will be realized.”

“ added that if these projects cannot be implemented after the expansion, they will occupy existing grid capacity and effectively block new wind and solar installations.

By the end of 2025, Turkey’'s total installed wind and solar capacity reached 40 GW’. Accordingly, the 33 GW ’ battery project pipeline represents the country's current wind and solar capacity. %That's 83’.

However, the report states that batteries have an average storage time of 2.5 hours worldwide, while most projects in Turkey’ have storage times as short as about an hour.

Capacity Increase Required Due to Increased Density in Ports

Hamdi Erçelik, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Port Operators Association TÜRKLİM, talked about the performance of the ports in 2024, the problems observed and the investments to be made in the ports. According to the World Newspaper, Erçelik;

I find the 2024 performance of our ports positive, and the numbers show this. The amount of cargo handled in ports in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year %3,2 increased to 269 million 182 thousand tons, the amount of containers handled compared to the same period of the previous year %It increased by 11.2 to 6 million 781 thousand TEU ⁇ . The amount of cargo going from our ports to foreign ports in June compared to the same month of the previous year %With a decrease of 2.9, it was 11 million 266 thousand 49 tons.

The increase in the total cargo in our ports since February stopped in May, and continued in June. %There was a 3.5% decline. But still in the six-month total data %There was an increase of 3.2. When we look at the main reason for the slowdown in the increase, it is seen that it is due to the decrease in the amount of cargo coming to our ports from abroad in May and June. When we look at the types of loads, it is observed that the decrease in liquid loads continues. In the first half, Aliağa led the field with a trading volume of 44.2 million tons in total load, while the region has experienced an uninterrupted upward trend since the beginning of the year. In Kocaeli, which is in the second place, a total of 42.7 million tons was reached. On the basis of the port presidency in the container, Kocaeli, Tekirdağ and Aliağa port presidencies continue to increase uninterruptedly. Especially in the first half of Aliağa ⁇ da average %A significant uptrend of 35 was recorded.

How's the painting on the container front?

The slowdown in the increase in containers in Turkey, which started in May, continued in June and monthly development %3,2 increased to 1 million 137 thousand TEU. 6 months of the year compared to the same period of the year %We see a very high increase of 6 million 781 thousand TEU ⁇ ya with an increase of 11.2. Especially when we look at the global developments in containers; In addition to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it was expected that the impact of geopolitical factors throughout 2024 would be even more negative with the impact of the Red Sea crisis. However, it is understood that the dynamics of the container market will change with the reorganization of trade routes as a result of Europe and the USA's efforts to reduce import dependence on China.

How do you evaluate the general situation of the world's ports along the line from Asya ⁇ to Avrupa ⁇ ?

The Red Sea Crisis, which broke out in November 2023, also directly and indirectly affected the Turkish maritime transport and port sector in different ways. While restrictions on access to the Suez Canal have led to delays in supply chains and increased costs, this crisis has also created significant opportunities for Turkish ports. Due to security concerns, ships' preference for the Cape of Good Hope over the Suez Canal led to a marked increase in transit freight volume at Turkish ports. Average transit container handling in Turkish ports in the first 5 months of 2024 compared to 2023 %It increased by 54.26. This further strengthened Turkey's strategic position and increased the importance of our ports in the global logistics chain.

How is your assessment of the increase in transit loads?

Energy transport has been affected by this crisis. However, despite the contraction of the trade volume of Turkish ports before the crisis, it has tended to recover thanks to the increase in transit loads with the crisis. The rise of insurance costs, along with security concerns, has led to ships being diverted to alternative routes, resulting in increased operational burdens as well as additional costs at Turkish ports. However, these costs were offset by increased demand and an increase in transit loads. In addition, the global shortage of containers has caused serious bottlenecks in ports. The difficulty of waiting for ships for a long time and finding empty containers caused disruptions in supply chains, negatively affecting production processes. According to the data of ⁇ Turkiye Startup Ecosystem Investment Report ⁇ prepared by Statrtup Centrum, the artificial intelligence and machine learning sector has become the most active sector with 31 investments in the first half of 2024 and has become the most invested sector of all time. Artificial intelligence and machine learning were followed by games with 14 investments, sustainability with 11 investments & environment and fintech sectors with 10 investments.

During this period, the number of artificial intelligence initiatives has also increased. According to the map of artificial intelligence initiatives prepared by the Turkish Artificial Intelligence Initiative (TRAI), the number of artificial intelligence initiatives in Turkey reached 350 ⁇ with 12 initiatives added in the second quarter of this year. Artificial intelligence-based startups, especially used in areas such as health, education, finance and automation, have a great growth potential.

In 2024, the startup ecosystem, led by artificial intelligence, started to move and started to rise again after its poor performance in 2023. A total of $586.8 million was invested in startups in the first half of the year, when a total of 245 startups received investments.

Turkey's startup ecosystem remains attractive

This figure surpasses the investment amount made in the whole of 2023. According to the ⁇ Türkiye Startup Investments ⁇ report prepared by KPMG Turkey M&A and 212 teams, the total transaction volume, which was $1.84 billion in 2022, decreased to $497 million in 2023. The total number of investments was 297.

According to experts, although macroeconomic difficulties and geopolitical tensions in the global economy in 2023 led to a decrease in venture capital investments and transaction volume, the jump in the first half of 2024 shows that the Turkish startup ecosystem remains attractive.

In recent years, R&D and innovation projects, innovative collaborations and initiatives with government incentives have started to attract more attention in Turkey. In this way, investments that will grow startups such as technoparks, technoparks, R&D centers, incubation centers have become more audible.

This mobility is also of great importance in terms of Turkey's development. More flexible, innovative and fast-moving than traditional business models, startups are not only the driving force of the economy, but also play a key role in the transformation of businesses and industries.

⁇ Plays an important role in development ⁇

Dr. R. Erdem Erkul, founder and chairman of the board of directors of Cerebrum Tech, a domestic technology company that is one of the leading technology manufacturers of the sector, says that startups fed by the idea of entrepreneurship have become important for the socio-economic development of countries where innovative ideas and investments are important. According to Erkul ⁇ a, the flexible, solution-oriented and adaptive structure of startup ⁇ s, fast growth and big impacts lead the world to startup ⁇ s.

Startups, whose role in the business world is becoming more and more prominent, are also among the decisive wheels in the economic cycle. Rapidly growing startups increase employment by hiring more. These structures, which stimulate market competition with innovative ideas and technologies, force traditional companies to act in line with technological developments and transformations and expand the share by directing the business cycles of classical structures to more dynamic areas.

The growth of start-ups also creates an ecosystem that supports them. In this ecosystem, there are service providers, investors, consultants and other companies that want to do business with startups. Such ecosystems add vitality to economies and stimulate economic growth.

Funded through venture capital and other investments, these investments strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem and pave the way for more entrepreneurs to succeed in the future. This supports economic growth and innovation.

Successful startups often compete not only in local markets, but also in national and international markets. This increases Turkey's economic competitiveness and export potential.

⁇ Contribute to the country's economy ⁇

According to Erkul ⁇ , when we look at startups and the overall outlook of the startup ecosystem in our country, it can be said that the Turkish economy is competitive, that the private sector holds the potential to lead different initiatives, and that the public sector has a regulatory role that can cooperate with the private sector. With these features, Erkul states that successful startups emerging from Turkey's startup ecosystem will pave the way for new startups and contribute to the economy of our developing country: In this way, we can rise to the level of contemporary civilizations and produce our high value-added products ourselves and take our place in the international market. Increased support and interest in the startup ecosystem; It is in the best interest of all of us to take steps to transform knowledge into practice, labor, technology and capital.
