Chevron’'s proposal to join the Offshore Block 10’ underlines the growing importance of the Eastern Mediterranean ’ in the European ’'s energy environment.
The U.S. energy giant, in partnership with HelleniQ Energy, has applied to join the Block 10 concession off the Gulf of Kyparissia in the Southern Ionian Sea, ’. The companies also requested the transfer of the operator role from HelleniQ Energy’ to Chevron’.
The agreement is in the privilege of Chevron’ %HelleniQ Energy’ is subject to regulatory approval. He will keep ’ in his hand. Chevron would also be the operator of the block.
The move comes at a time when international energy companies continue to expand their presence in the Eastern Mediterranean ’. Chevron already operates the Aphrodite gas field off Cyprus, and Greece is expanding its exploration portfolio in ’, reflecting the company's growing interest in the region.
This development further strengthens the presence of major US energy companies in Greece’'s offshore hydrocarbon sector, at a time when the Eastern Mediterranean’ is growing in interest as a potential source of energy for Europe.
The growing interest of American companies in exploration activities in Greece’ is linked both to estimates of significant natural gas reserves and to the geopolitical stability that Greece’, as an EU and NATO member state, envisions in a strategically sensitive region.
Chevron and HelleniQ Energy have signed lease agreements covering four additional marine regions south of Crete and Peloponnese’, which strengthens ’'s role in the region's evolving energy dynamics.
According to the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the first two search phases of Block 10’ have been completed and the decision on the third and final phase, which includes exploration drilling, is still pending. The second phase is being extended by 18 months to allow the consortium to complete the evaluation of data collected through 2D and 3D seismic surveys.
Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou described this move as important for the development of Greece’'s hydrocarbon sector, saying that the participation of Chevron’ confirms that “Greece’ is now at the center of major energy deals and investments.
“Greece is constantly strengthening its position on the Eastern Mediterranean energy map, ” said.
The move came amid wider changes in ’'s offshore exploration sector. The ExxonMobil-HelleniQ Energy consortium recently decided not to move to the next search phase in the “ block West of ’Girit”.
But Chevron’'s interest in Block 10’ shows that international energy companies continue to see opportunities in selected Greek offshore areas, particularly those considered to have lower geological risks.
Market players believe that international companies are reevaluating the offshore blocs of Greece ’ as a whole, based both on geological data and increased geopolitical interest in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
